While Swimmers Escaped Violence, Widely-Shared Image Depicts Lifeguard Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, describes the iconic shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend night, she, like many neighbors, heard cracking sounds echoing across the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. She left her residence, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks on display made it clear something was wrong.

While standing on the avenue, conversing with a duo who had run up the slope soaked, she became aware of someone moving up at her rear. It was a rescuer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. He was the only one running in the opposite way that all the others was trying to get away from, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He was sprinting into something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to go in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally pedal to the metal running.”

A Symbol of Courage Amidst Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous instances of courage in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics treating many victims.

Collective Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the community, with the beach facility next to the scene of the violence serving as a temporary treatment center. It was shared that other team members were also seen helping out, including going into the ocean to rescue people in distress.

Following the attack, statements of gratitude were shared. An online statement expressed appreciation for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “compassion will always overcome darkness”.

The group of lifeguards later shared a message, noting they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the care directed at our team,” the group wrote. “In time, we will share our stories in the hope that it aids those involved.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many permanent beach safety officers, said that the crew rose to the occasion from the instant the shooting commenced until late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional narratives, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” stated a local official.

“These individuals show dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous coastlines secure for visitors, but what we witnessed on that evening should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the terror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much good we have seen in the face of such hatred.”
