The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last season concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
