Plans for Putin-Trump Meeting Shelved Shortly After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Suggested

Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has declared.

Recently Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The administration did not share further information on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources claimed his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with sources indicating the president had pressured him to cede large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Moscow.

However, on Monday Trump supported a ceasefire proposal backed by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the current front line.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he stated.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on this week, indicating that halting hostilities would only amount to a brief pause.

Negotiating Stances

The "root causes" of the war demanded attention, Lavrov said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of maximalist demands that include the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky stated talks regarding the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's unscheduled call with Trump recently came ahead of reports that the US was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he commented.
