A popular South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Police said the 40-year-old media personality was approached by three suspects, one of whom shot at him before escaping on foot.

The reason of the attack is unknown and no one has been arrested have been made, as per the official statement.

How It Happened

Law enforcement revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a location close to the city center landmark.

He had devoted time at the property overseeing the installation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, according to reports.

"The report indicates the man was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," an official report said.

Surveillance tape showed a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what resembled a security uniform firing shots on Stock before running away.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was shot but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the incident.

Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were recovered from the location.

Officials are asking members of the public who may have have information to come forward.

"Our information indicates they covered significant ground after the attack, and investigators have been following their trail to determine their whereabouts," stated a police chief.

His sister, Nicole Stock, stated the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.

"Words fail me. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about subjects not many people were prepared to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the citizens to not sharing explicit content from the scene, explaining this was an incredibly difficult time, particularly for Stock's children.
