The distinctive yellow-fronted residential building visible behind assisted us locate the footage.

Our team is verifying video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to check the site from which the pictures originated was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.

Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
