The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. It was essentially an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Context for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate net worth of $16 billion, making the fine manageable for the wealthy owner.
