California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run
The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections are over.
"Yeah, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor stated when questioned about seriously considering a White House bid post the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
Newsom's time in office as California's leader ends in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he cautioned that any decision is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he said.
Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary
He has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and championing a proposition that would increase Democratic representation in Congress in following redistricting by Republicans. This action has made him a target from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a Sunday interview on a major news network. Duffy announced plans to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened eliminating the authority to provide CDLs.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," Duffy stated, after a recent fatal crash in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that caused three deaths and four injuries.
The governor's team highlighted that the federal government had approved the individual's authorization multiple times, which allowed him to secure a trucking license under U.S. law.
The transportation secretary had before stated he was holding back additional funds from the state for ignoring linguistic standards for truck drivers.
Strong Response from the Governor's Office
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand national statutes," the governor's team retorted in a recent comment responding to the funding warnings. "For now, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a death rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."
Polling Data and Political Future
A this month's study showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for president in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has increased to an typical level of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an typical level of over 40% to 38.4%.
Some time ago, Newsom stated while visiting several swing states that he had "no clue" about his future for 2028.
He also referenced his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.
"The idea that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, amazing," he said. "Who the hell knows? I await who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the voters."
